When Life Knocks You Down and Takes Everything — Here’s How You Get Back Up Stronger

When Life Knocks You Down and Takes Everything — Here’s How You Get Back Up Stronger

by Rev. Michael Johnson

Brother, let’s be straight — you didn’t just take a loss, you got hit with a wrecking ball.
Your marriage ended. The kids aren’t around like they used to be. Money? Gone. Friends? Disappeared. Status? Stripped. Self-esteem? Shattered.

And if that wasn’t enough, depression is riding you like a shadow you can’t shake.
You wear the mask so people think you’re fine, but inside… you’re exhausted, angry, and asking, “What’s the point?”

Here’s the thing:
Real men don’t stay down — but they also don’t rebuild alone.

Why Jesus Is the Only Way Forward

You’ve tried the distractions — work, sports, scrolling, late nights. But deep down, you know they don’t fix the problem. They just put a band-aid over a gunshot wound.

Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
You don’t need another escape. You need a foundation that can’t be taken from you again. That foundation is Jesus Christ.

He Gets It

Jesus knows betrayal, loneliness, and pain. Isaiah 53:3 says He was “a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief.”
He knows what it’s like to have friends bail, to be misunderstood, to be left standing alone in your hardest moment (Matthew 26:56).
But here’s the difference — He didn’t stay down. And in Him, you won’t either.

How to Start Rebuilding

  1. Admit you can’t do it alone.
Pride keeps men stuck. Drop the “I got this” act. That’s not weakness — that’s wisdom.
  2. Call on Jesus now, not later.
Romans 10:13“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” That’s not church talk, that’s a promise.
  3. Get around men who build, not destroy.
Isolation kills. Join a band of brothers who will fight with you and for you. That’s what Built Different to Build Different is all about.

Action Step:
Pray this out loud:
“Jesus, I can’t fix this on my own. I’ve been broken, I’ve been lost, but today I give You my life. Forgive me for my sins. Make me new. Lead me into the purpose You have for me. Amen.”

Join the brotherhood:

  • Get in the Built Different to Build Different Facebook group.
  • Show up at church this Sunday.
  • Reach out to another man today and tell him the truth about where you’re at.
