Chicago has a hunger and homelessness crisis and it’s growing.

Poverty, hunger, and homelessness are nothing new. Jesus said himself the poor will always be around. Isaiah, writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit prophesied outlining Jesus Christs’ assignment on the earth.

ISAIAH 61:1-3

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.
to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn.
to grant to those who mourn in Zion; to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.

Jesus Christs’ mission did not end when he ascended. As his disciples it is on us to continue carrying out His mission until His return.

This is personal for me because there was a time when all I could afford was to pay rent and utilities and get gas so I could go to work and school. There were only a few dollars left for food. Even though I tried to make those few dollars stretch it was not enough to keep me from blacking out due to hunger.

Shortly after I had blacked out at school anonymous people began to place a bag or two of grocery outside my apartment door and it brought me to tears because Jesus through the generosity of others cared for me. That experience made Jesus even the more real to me and increased my faith in God and the scriptures.

Eventually I was made aware of a ministry that I could go to and get food items for free to tide me over from time to time. I now had a way to get energy to attend classes and energy to work. Ever since then I have been sensitive to the needs of others.

“1 in 4 children in Cook County are at risk of hunger. Retail food prices have been relatively stable over the past 20 years. From 1999 to 2019, grocery prices increased an average of 2 percent per year. Food inflation accelerated again in late 2021 reaching an annual inflation rate of 10 percent in March 2022, the first-time annual food inflation had reached double digits since March 1981. Rising food costs make it harder for people to afford their groceries. As food prices rise, the amount of food a family can purchase with its monthly food budget goes down.”

“Food Insecurity Places the most vulnerable at risk of increased health issues.
It is not uncommon for persons with diabetes to be hospitalized with dangerously low levels of blood glucose because they haven’t had access to enough food. Food insecurity is a contributor to chronic diseases that are disproportionately borne by persons with low incomes and limited life opportunities. Food insecurity itself is a symptom of poverty.”

Hunger also affects those that are homeless.
“Homelessness is defined as someone that does not have a permanent home and stays in a shelter, on the streets, temporarily with others, and/or in other places that are not meant for living. 2023 statistics indicate that there are over 30,000 Chicago Residents that are currently homeless in Cook County and 68% of that number are minorities.”
