The Ultimate Guide to Discerning Christian Influencers and Teachers

by Rev. Michael Johnson January 13, 2025
    written by Rev. Michael Johnson
    1. Are they drawing attention to themselves or to Jesus Christ?

A Christ-centered teacher focuses on glorifying Jesus, not themselves. If their ministry revolves around their image, possessions, or lifestyle, be cautious.

    • Scriptures: John 3:30, Philippians 2:3, Galatians 1:10
    1. Does their teaching promote spiritual growth or worldly success?

Biblical teaching focuses on building a deeper relationship with Christ, not prioritizing personal achievement, prosperity, or worldly ambitions.

    • Scriptures: 1 Timothy 6:3-5, Colossians 3:1-2
    1. Do they teach Scripture in context, verse by verse?

True teachers respect the integrity of the Bible, teaching it as it was written. Be wary of those who twist Scripture or use it out of context to fit their agenda.

    • Scriptures: 2 Timothy 2:15, Acts 17:11, 2 Peter 1:20-21
    1. Are they biblically qualified to teach or minister?

Look for evidence of a calling, training, and mentorship under seasoned leaders. Biblical leadership isn’t self-assigned; it’s God-ordained and affirmed by the church.

    • Scriptures: 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Ephesians 4:11-12, Titus 1:5-9
    1. Are they accountable to a church or spiritual authority?

Isolation is dangerous in ministry. Accountability ensures integrity, correction, and spiritual health.

    • Scriptures: Hebrews 13:17, Acts 20:28, Proverbs 11:14
    1. Do they emphasize repentance and transformation?

Genuine teaching leads to heart transformation and turning away from sin, aligning with the transformative power of the Gospel.

    • Scriptures: Acts 3:19, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Matthew 4:17
    1. Do their lives bear the fruit of the Spirit?

A godly teacher’s life will reflect the fruit of the Spirit, demonstrating Christlike character and integrity.

    • Scriptures: Galatians 5:22-23, Matthew 7:16-20
    1. Are they critical, divisive, or self-exalting?

Godly leaders avoid arguments, criticism, and self-promotion. A contentious spirit is not from Christ.

    • Scriptures: 2 Timothy 2:23-24, Proverbs 6:16-19, 1 Corinthians 1:10-13
    1. Do they focus on sensationalism or the Gospel?

Constant prophetic claims, sensational headlines, or obsession with controversy often indicate misplaced priorities. True ministry focuses on salvation and discipleship.

    • Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 14:3, 2 Peter 2:1-3, 2 Timothy 4:3-4
    1. Do they misuse the Bible to support conspiracy theories?

Some influencers distort Scripture to sensationalize topics like aliens, hidden knowledge, or secret church agendas. This is not biblical teaching.

    • Scriptures: Colossians 2:8, 2 Timothy 3:13, Deuteronomy 29:29
    1. Do they prioritize material gain over ministry?

Beware of influencers whose primary focus seems to be monetizing their platform rather than genuinely helping others grow in Christ.

    • Scriptures: Matthew 6:24, 1 Timothy 6:9-10, 2 Peter 2:3
    1. Are they novices lacking spiritual maturity?

Scripture warns against allowing new believers to teach or lead, as they lack the depth and experience needed for sound ministry.

    • Scriptures: 1 Timothy 3:6, James 3:1, Hebrews 5:12-14
    1. Are they distorting the Gospel to fit cultural trends?

Faithful teachers uphold the unchanging truth of God’s Word, even when it’s countercultural. Watch for those who compromise biblical doctrine to appeal to modern ideologies.

    • Scriptures: Galatians 1:6-9, 2 Corinthians 4:2, Matthew 5:18-19
    1. Do they glorify Jesus and make disciples?

The core mission of any Christian leader is to glorify Jesus and equip believers to grow as His disciples.

    • Scriptures: Matthew 28:19-20, John 15:8, 1 Corinthians 10:31
    1. Are they consistent in character and doctrine?

Consistency in teaching and living out the Gospel is key. Hypocrisy or frequent doctrinal shifts are warning signs.

    • Scriptures: Titus 2:7-8, James 1:22, 2 Corinthians 1:12
    1. Do they use their platform to build unity in the Body of Christ?

A true teacher seeks to build unity among believers, not sow discord or division for personal gain.

    • Scriptures: Ephesians 4:3, John 17:21, 1 Peter 3:8

    Conclusion

In a world flooded with voices, it’s vital to test every teacher and influencer against the Word of God. Use this guide to protect your spiritual growth, ensuring you follow those who glorify Christ and faithfully teach His Word. As Paul reminds us, “Test everything; hold fast to what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21).

Hi everyone and welcome to Pneuma Word Magazine. I came to Christ in the early eighties during the height of what was known to be the "Word Movement". This move of God emphasized scripturally accurate teaching. During that season people would ask you if you went to a word church. If the answer was no they exhorted you to go to a word church so you could grow spiritually. As the founder and editor of Pneuma Word Magazine my committment to you is properly exegited scripture and the revealed rhema word of God in article and video format. We will have other guests writers that are solid in biblical Theology for your learning and development as well. So, alot of good things are coming in 2024. Be sure and subscribe to Pneuma Word Magazine so that you will not miss out. Thank You
